Big boost in Metro Detroit new housing starts

New housing starts in Southeastern Michigan saw a healthy bounce in the first three months of this year, according to data released Monday morning by Housing Consultants Inc.

Building permits for single-family homes and other units in the nine counties rose by 115.8 percent over the first quarter of 2009, reports the Clarkston-based data tracking service.

In Macomb County, activity jumped 355.2 percent to 132 permits, compared to 29 in the first quarter of 2009. Oakland County saw a 154.2 percent increase, with 122 permits, and Wayne’s 155 permits is a 121-percent improvement from the same period last year.
